Biography
"Sassy
and sophisticated
...unleashing a voice that can pierce the listener's heart
as equally as it caress the ear ...flawless"
- After Dark Chicago
Praised by the Chicago Sun Times for her "bold,
brassy voice," Joan
Curto has quickly established herself as one of the premier female
interpreters of the American popular songbook.
With her classic, heartwarming and emotive vocal styling, Joan has appeared at some of the nation's most prestigious clubs to audience and critical acclaim including New York City's The
Duplex and Judy's, The Royal Room in Palm Beach, Odette's
in Pennsylvania and Milwaukee's Stackner Theater and the Sharon
Lynne Wilson Center for the Performing Arts.
Winner of Chicago's After Dark Award for "Outstanding Cabaret
Artist," Joan has performed to SRO crowds at some of the Chicago area's top stages including Park
West, Davenport's, Thorne Auditorium, Maxim's and the Crossroads
Theatre. She was also featured at the ASCAP and Chicago Humanities
Festival Concerts and the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Chicago Cabaret Convention, where she shared the stage with such musical luminaries as Grammy and Tony Award winner Stephen
Schwartz, Karen Mason, and Golden Globe winner Amanda McBroom (The Rose).
Her one woman show, Unexpressed, which played in New York and Chicago, was named "One
of the Year's Ten Best Shows" by both After Dark Chicago and Cabaret
Hotline Online. The show gave audiences a chance to hear what New York's
Cabaret Scenes Magazine called Joan's "very best, as she displayed
that gorgeous voice of hers at its most excitingly luxurious."
She also performed in the tribute show "An American Romance... The Songs
of Irving Berlin," which played in New York and across the country to great critical and audience response.
Joan's 2004 debut CD release May I Suggest, is a winning collection of classic ballads, standards and jazz favorites. With Joan's musical versatility, the recording is a showcase for what After
Dark Chicago calls "a voice that can pierce the listeners heart as
equally as it caresses the ear."
With her warm and heartfelt performances, Joan Curto is a musical treasure who takes her audiences on a moving and delightful journey.
